Just Do Your Job - That Is All?

Just Do Your Job …That’s All?

A while back I was having a conversation with a person who was telling me about all the problems at his workplace. He commented to me that he doesn’t bother with it and he felt his only responsibility was just to do his job and that is all. For the Christian, just getting your job done is not enough. Simply going to work with the attitude that I am only responsible to carry out my company’s job description falls short of Christ’s commission for us to be light out in the world and salt of the earth. If our faith cannot be expressed in the way we do our work, then it is no more than a recreational activity we do on our leisure time once a week.

For the Christian, every time we go to work we bring a set of beliefs and practices that are not of this world.  Certainly each of us is responsible before God to fulfill our company’s job description, but it should never be done as something isolated from our Christian faith. For instance, our faith in God as we do our work means we acknowledge His presence with us and rely on His guidance each step of the way throughout our workday. When we try to perform our job without holding to this belief, we tend to feel like we are a victim of circumstances and God is not interested in the details of our work.

When we do our work as unto the Lord and treat people with the kindness and love of God, we as well bring a persuasive influence in our work. It will become obvious to those around that our work is much more than just a job we do. It is a calling that we live and a service we render to God. We have an opportunity to demonstrate this in the little details of our work because they are of significance and importance to Him. On the other hand, if people hear us claim to be a Christian and yet see us perform our work like a mindless or heartless machine, we miss opportunity to demonstrate that there is a real God who is among us in the workplace.

Has your work become a routine that seems like a mechanical function? Maybe you are hearing people tell you to just do your job and that’s all. However, God has a better way for us to do our job. When what we believe about Him is woven into the fabric of our work, then we can see our job as a service to God, and not just to our company.
